These sausage rolls taste amazing and look like you’ve slaved for hours making them. The truth is they require only 4 ingredients and could not be easier. Perfect for weekend breakfasts, kids lunch boxes or cut into smaller rolls for party nibbles.
Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 40 minutes | Serves about 6-8 large sized rolls or 24 party bite-sized rolls.
Ingredients
- 6-8 thick, good quality sausages of choice
- 1 package ready to roll puff pastry
- 1 egg
- 1 Tbsp fennel seeds
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 180C (350F) and line a large baking tray with baking paper. 2. On a large cutting board, lay out the sheet of puff pastry horizontally. Prepare a bowl with the egg and 1 Tbsp of water. Beat lightly with a fork and set aside. 3. Using a serrated knife, remove the skins from the sausages, but leaving them intact in a sausage shape. Place the sausage meat on the left-hand side of the pastry and then roll the pastry tightly around the sausage. Using a pastry brush, add some egg wash to the seam, then roll the pastry over a little more to close. Trim with a knife.4. Continue until all the sausages/pastry is used up, then cut into the desired number of rolls and place them on the baking tray
5. Make some diagonal slashes on the top of each sausage roll, then brush with egg wash. Sprinkle some fennel seeds on the top of each roll.
6. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes. Allow cooling for 10 minutes before serving warm.Notes: To freeze, prepare the rolls but stop before baking. Allow the egg wash to dry a little, then freeze in a single layer. Defrost at room temperature then bake as per instructions.
