What to Look for When Buying a Non-Stick Frypan

When it comes to purchasing a non-stick frypan, there are several factors to consider.

Size: First and foremost the frypan size. Choose a size that will suit your cooking needs, whether it's for an individual meal or a family dinner. The most commonly purchased frying pans are 20-30cm.

Material: Another important factor is the base material of the pan itself. Look for high-quality materials such as stainless steel or hard-anodized aluminium that are durable and can withstand higher temperatures without warping easily.

Coating: Teflon coatings have long been popular, but many people prefer ceramic coatings as they are more environmentally friendly and safer for cooking at high temperatures.

Handle: An ergonomic designed handle provides a comfortable grip while using it over extended periods. Also consider the pan's handle material as stainless steel, aluminium and silicone won’t conduct heat.

Lid: Non-stick frying pan with lids trap heat and moisture better than an open fry pan, resulting in faster, more even cooking while retaining flavours and nutrients. It also reduces splattering and can be used for steaming, simmering, or keeping food warm. If your pan doesn’t come with a lid, consider a splatter guard for reducing clean-up.

Non-stick Frypan Coatings

Teflon Coating

One of the most popular materials used for non-stick fry pans is Teflon. Modern teflon-coated non-stick pans are constantly reformulated to ensure only the highest standards of safety. One of our favourite non-toxic non-stick options are the Tefal frying pans as they're PFOA Free, lead-free and cadmium free.

Diamond-Infused Coating

Some fry pans feature a diamond-infused non-stick coating that is exceptionally durable, providing enhanced scratch resistance and longevity. The diamond particles contribute to the superior non-stick properties allowing them to conduct heat and offer greater durability even at higher cooking temperatures. Woll fry pans and Swiss Diamond frying pans are commonly made with a diamond-infused coating.

Titanium Coating

Titanium-based coatings are known for their exceptional strength and durability. These coatings offer excellent non-stick performance and are resistant to scratches and abrasions. Titanium-coated fry pans are often metal utensil-safe, allowing for more versatility in the kitchen. One of our favourite titanium-coated frying pans areScanpan fry panswhich use their patented Stratanium and Stratanium+ non-stick coatings.

Non-stick fry pans vs stainless steel fry pans

Non-stick pans have a coating that prevents sticking, making them easy to clean and ideal for delicate foods. Stainless steel frying pans are durable and versatile, usable at higher temperatures without harmful chemicals. Stainless steel pans resist scratches, allowing the use of metal utensils. However, cleaning them can be challenging as unlike a non-stick frying pan, food is more likely to stick to the surface. Ultimately, the choice depends on personal preference and cooking needs, as both have advantages and disadvantages.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Are non-stick frying pans good for you?

Non-stick pans can be a convenient option for cooking certain foods, but their health implications depend on various factors. When used correctly and maintained properly, non-stick pans can offer advantages such as reduced need for oil and easy clean-up. We recommend opting for high-quality non-stick pans made with safe and durable materials. Look for products that state they are free from PFOA, lead, PTFE, and cadmium in their product description.

  1. Can you deep fry in a non-stick pan?

Deep frying in a non-stick pan is generally not recommended. The high temperatures involved in deep frying can damage the non-stick coating of the cookware, potentially releasing harmful particles and compromising the pan's performance.

  1. Why are non-stick pans considered toxic or harmful to your health?

in the 1980s, one of the World's largest producers of non-stick coatings DuPont, was discovered to have had PFOS and PFOA within a material known as C8 in the composition of Teflon. Since 2015 the company no longer produces Teflon with these harmful chemicals that were discovered as being toxic. While non-stick coatings are known to be a lot safer these days, we do recommend that when cooking with non-stick that you follow the manufacturer guidelines for the optimal cooking temperatures as if you cook with too high heat on non-stick pans, the non-stick material will tend to burn and smoke which can be harmful. We also advise against using metal utensils as that can damage the non-stick coatings and can cause it to flake off. To avoid this, we recommend using only nylon or silicone cooking utensils.
