Wedgwood’s Rich History

Founded over two centuries ago by a 29-year-old Josiah Wedgwood in Burslem, Staffordshire, England, Wedgwood is an iconic English brand with a proud British heritage. At that time, Josiah was an independent potter with a penchant for experimenting with clay and developing new techniques. He went on to invent new materials and methods that would break new grounds in the following years. Many are still in use today, earning him the title "Father of English Potters”.

At present, Wedgwood tableware can be found gracing the tables of monarchs and Heads of State such as the Vatican, the Kremlin, and the White House. The brand’s charm dates back to when Queen Charlotte ordered a cream-coloured Wedgwood tea set and found it to be of utmost satisfaction in style and quality. Since then, Wedgwood has been no stranger to the royal household, with the brand even acquiring the Royal Warrant from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1995.

Excellence in Craftsmanship

Renowned for their premium quality stoneware, Wedgwood blends ancient skills with modern technology to create irresistible luxury pieces. The highly skilled artisans at Wedgwood still utilise many of the techniques and materials developed by Josiah Wedgwood to produce exquisite teaware and dinnerware made from bone china, porcelain, and more. By incorporating ancient skills such as throwing, modelling and decorating by hand into their manufacturing process, Wedgwood effectively honours the past and preserves these valuable skills for the future.

The Wedgwood Method

Each Wedgwood piece is made using the highest craftsmanship with careful attention given to details to ensure the highest quality without any flaws. A good example is the production of a single Wedgwood fine bone china plate – each plate goes through 6 separate stages with 36 hours of handcraft by 4 craftsmen; the entire process spans 3 days:

Stage 1: The plate is moulded using a revolving mould and a shaped profile to form the initial shape of the plate’s back; excess clay is removed.
Stage 2: Any seam marks created by the moulding process are removed and excess clay is cut away. The plate’s surface is then hand sponged and smoothened before being fired.
Stage 3: After the firing process, the plate is sprayed with a fine glaze mist. Any excess glaze is wiped from the foot and the plate is then fired again.
Stage 4: The plate is either decorated by hand painting, or a lithographed design is transferred onto the piece. The plate is fired for the third time.
Stage 5: At this stage, the artisan may add any additional decorations by hand, apply a liquid gold detailing, or apply colours to create enamelled decorations.
Stage 6: Once all detailing is complete, the plate is carefully examined and if it passes the examination, it will then be shipped to your table to be enjoyed.
