How to Entertain Outdoors Zero Waste Style

David Kahn |

What is it that comes to your mind when you think of entertaining your guests outdoors? Pool parties, outdoor picnic tables & grazing platters, or an elegant afternoon tea in your humble garden? What about the party equipment you’ll need for either one of those parties you’re hosting? Maybe disposable plastic cups, Styrofoam party plates, and plastic cutlery? Perhaps not! Using disposable wares may be convenient as it eliminates the need for laborious cleanup and they usually come cheap, but that convenience certainly comes with a far greater unseen cost. Think overloaded landfills and innocent little sea friends who get caught up in our bid for convenience. On top of that, constantly buying disposables will eventually rack up a significant cost in the long run! The fight for zero waste is stronger than ever as every bit of our choices, though seemingly harmless, will affect the environment in the long run. Imagine planning a fun picnic at your local park only to find that the park is littered with disposable products! That’s the last thing we’d want to see. With summer around the corner, let’s explore how to entertain outdoors in zero waste style for both picnics and poolside parties!

Waste-Free Storage to Start

Picnic:

It is very common to see people pack their goods in plastic bags thanks to easy methods of disposal. In line with Everten’s mission to be environmentally responsible, we decided to do away with disposable plastics. We now pack picnic dishes and essentials in our SunnyLife Luxe Picnic Basket as this stylish picnic basket also comes with a transportable table and enough tableware for four within its generous compartments. For our environmentally-conscious friends on a budget, the Avanti 4 Person Picnic Basket Wicker in Tribal Monochrome does a similarly amazing job with its ample storage space. Reusable plates and cutlery can add up in weight, so the large carry straps on this basket are certainly helpful!

Poolside Party:

Parties by the pool during summer won’t be complete without a waterproof mat for partygoers to get their tan on! If deck chairs are not available, grab a SunnyLife Picnic Blanket to lay around and enjoy the sun. This waterproof picnic blanket is also great for beach parties as you can easily fold it into a carry bag. If there are deck chairs available, we prefer the IconChef Easy Carrier to carry and store our pool party essentials. Some of us here can’t help but fulfil our mermaid dreams in the pool over getting a tan!

Goodbye Disposable Cups, Clear and Reusable Cups are Très Chic

Picnic:

Let’s go for disposable plastic cups! Uhh, how about no? Disposable plastic cups are now passé. They may be easy to dispose of and be almost weightless in your picnic basket, but these things take forever to biodegrade. We’d rather use the Bodum Pavina Outdoor Double Wall Tumbler as it looks chic AND keeps our drinks insulated. If you’re planning to include wine in your drink selection, wine-lovers rejoice! The Porta Vino Wine Tumbler will safely store your wine while keeping it at an optimum temperature. You can now properly savour your Shiraz and its lovely aroma over having it in a flat-based tumbler.

Poolside Party:

The one thing we never forget for poolside parties are the drinks. How could you pass off a cold one or a crisp apple cider? Govino’s Cider and Beer Glasses are perfect for a sweet pint of elderflower apple cider or a refreshing pint of tropical craft ale by the poolside with your buddies. It looks like glass, feels like glass, but does not shatter like glass! To add a touch of class for a fancy poolside dining experience, you can use Strahl’s Stemless Osteria Set. Though slightly pricier than the Govino Beer and Cider tumblers, these polycarbonate cups have the elegant look and feel of glassware. Now you can enjoy a glass of red while looking every bit classy for your Instagram-feed!

Reusable Does Not End with Cups!

Picnic:

Now that you’ve gotten your beautiful set of reusable cups sorted, it does not end there! Picnics usually call for straws especially when some guests prefer to drink directly from the bottle, or in situations where drinks come with excess ice. We did away with disposable straws after countless horror stories of injured little turtles in the sea because of them. Instead, we opted for these Reusable Straws from Bolsa. These are durable for the great outdoors as they are made from silicone. Because it comes in the colours of the rainbow, these straws will also brighten the already sunny picnic mood!

Poolside Party:

Not forgetting our poolside party-loving people, these rainbow metal straws are incredibly stylish and fit the theme. Pair this with a watermelon tequila cocktail, or a strawberry and lime mojito for that perfect Instagram-worthy summer thirst quencher!

Serving Ware for the Occasion

Picnic:

Our most memorable picnic dish was a refreshing Rice Noodle Salad with Vietnamese Dressing. Can you imagine basking in the sun’s warmth with friends and family while crunching on a cool and colourful Vietnamese delight? What better way to serve this humble and refreshing salad than in the Serroni Fresco Unbreakable Salad Bowl. This shatterproof salad bowl certainly complemented our picnic setting thanks to its glass-like form that is surprisingly made from polycarbonate! Afternoon tea lovers will love The Outdoor Dept’s Laguna Bamboo 2 Tier Cake Stand. Our friends especially enjoyed the Persian Love Cakes we made and served on this beautiful tier stand for afternoon tea. It suited our zero waste alfresco experience thanks to its natural build of bamboo powder, corn powder, and resin.

Poolside Party:

Planning a summer poolside party with your friends and family? We’re without a doubt, fans of that! Between soaking in the pool to attacking the snack table, the usual favourites have always been chips and guacamole. Not only are these snacks easy to grab and go, serving them in the Royal Doulton Outdoor 1815 Serving Bowl has certainly enhanced its visual appeal! We love this dish because of its generous size and vibrant colour, which pairs perfectly with our favourite snacks.

Cutlery Organisation in Zero Waste Style

Picnic:

It’s an absolute headache to find your cutlery in a scattered mess when you’re laying out your picnic! We love our things organised and easily accessible, over having to hunt for the right spoon to pair our fork. The same goes whether indoors or outdoors. By storing our reusable cutlery in a beautiful woven bamboo caddy, our picnic aesthetics have never been more complete! The one we use comes with a centre loop so we can easily carry it to the picnic site.

Poolside Party:

Poolside parties are no different. Rather than having your sauces and cutlery scattered, keep them all together in a caddy that suits the theme! The one we use in our pool parties is RetroKitchen’s Cutlery Caddy. It not only looks like a cute beach bucket, but it also has ample space for your condiments, bottles, and cutlery. Now you don’t have to worry about random teaspoons on the floor or in the pool! We hope that our little guide has made the thought of entertaining outdoors with zero waste a little less daunting for you. Rather than overwhelm yourself, simply start small and watch as your conscious zero waste choices slowly become a great habit!
