5 Reasons Every Home Cook Needs a Good Quality Knife Set
Whether you’re an amateur home cook or budding master chef, a good quality knife set is essential. Aside from the fact that a good quality knife set (especially one in a good looking
knife block like this) is going to look good in your kitchen and impress anyone who comes to visit, there are a number of reasons that good knives are a must-have in any kitchen.
Sharp knives are safer
Believe it or not, it’s actually more dangerous for you to be chopping things with a dull knife than with a sharp knife. This is because a dull knife is more likely to be met with resistance, increasing the risk of slipping. With a sharp knife, you generally have a lot more control and won’t need to force your knife through your ingredients. So, in the interests of personal safety, you can totally justify splurging on that knife set.
Good knives make life easier in the kitchen
By this same token, sharp knives also make it much easier for you to do what you need to do in the kitchen. Dull knives are going to slow you down and make you frustrated. Ever tried cutting a tomato with a blunt knife? It doesn’t end well for anyone. Meanwhile, a sharp knife will get the job done faster and make cooking more enjoyable. Plus, a good sharp knife is going to cut through those difficult items a lot more readily. No more struggles with butternut pumpkin come soup season.

No matter what you’re doing, a knife set has you covered
Not all knives are made equal. By that I mean that knives are built for purpose, and whilst you will find many great multipurpose knives that can chop a range of different produce well, there’s no one knife that can do it all. A knife set, on the other hand, is going to have you covered no matter what it is you need to do.
You’ll find your serrated knives that are perfect for slicing bread without shredding it into a brand new shape or making a mess all over your kitchen, for example. Then you’ve got your chef’s knife which makes slicing meat a breeze, and vegetable knives which are great for, well, vegetables. And, some knife sets, like this one, even come with a handy pair of kitchen shears, so you can chop things like herbs in a matter of seconds.
A knife set will lift your kitchen game
Just as a luxury knife block is going to make your kitchen look good, the actual knives are going to make
you look good. Premium quality knives allow you to cut with better precision, meaning that you’ll finally be able to julienne those carrots with consistency. You’ll carve meat more cleanly, slice bread more evenly and fillet fish like you’ve been doing it for years.
You’ll have it forever
We all know that expression, you get what you pay for. This is especially true for knives. If you’re going to buy a set of sub par knives, you can expect to be replacing them again before too long. Cheaper knives wear out faster and don’t resharpen like good knives do, which means once they’re done, they’re done. Quality knives, on the other hand, are built to last, and, assuming you take of them, they’ll stay as good as they were the day you bought them for many years to come. Therefore, even though your eyes might water at the price of a top quality knife set, you’re making a long-term investment that will earn its keep tenfold.
So, if you’re going to treat yourself to a good quality knife set (and I recommend you do), be sure to store and clean them properly so that they stay in top condition. This means hand washing (sorry no dishwasher) and then drying your knives straight away, and keeping your knives covered up or stored in a knife block – never store them loosely in a drawer.
