Tips to Make Your Wine Glass Spotlessly Clean

David Kahn |

Wine glasses are designed to improve the taste of wine and the experience of drinking it. They are designed to look elegant and timeless, but they lose their appeal when they have leftover wine, marks, fingerprints, and stains. Some wine glasses are made of delicate crystal, so they need to be cleaned carefully. Tips for Cleaning Crystal Wine Glasses Wine experts recommend washing wine glasses by hand in hot water. Some wine connoisseurs advise against using dish soap, but if you insist on using it, be sure to rinse the glass thoroughly to completely remove all soap residue, which can interfere with the aroma and taste of the wine. Here are the steps to cleaning crystal stemware:
  • Rinse the glass in hot water
  • Use a drop of mild dish detergent for every glass and partially fill the glasses with hot water
  • Use baking soda to dissolve residual wine if the mild dish detergent or hot water does not do the trick.
  • Carefully handle the glass by the bowl while inserting a sponge, then turn the glass around instead of the sponge. Consider using a sponge that is attached to a long handle, so your hand does not have to be inside the glass.
  • Handle the bowl with one hand and use the sponge to wash the stem, base, and the outside of the glass. Do not hold the glass by its stem because it could break easily.
  • Rinse thoroughly with hot water
  • Air dry the wine glasses, right side up. Alternatively, you may use unscented paper towels, micro fibre cloth, or a lint-free towel to dry them by hand.
It is easier to wash glass wine stemware. If you have dishwasher-proof glasses, then you may use your dishwasher. Otherwise, wash them by hand using the same materials that are used for cleaning crystal stemware. Non-greasy wine glasses can be washed in the dishwasher without using detergent, but if they are dirtier, use only a drop of detergent without any rinsing aid.
