Scanpan TechnIQ Square Roaster Review

Becky Gilhespie |

Scanpan TechnIQ The Square Performance

Scanpan’s newest roaster from the TechnIQ line “The Square” literally has all bases covered as an all-in-one must-have for superb versatility in the kitchen!

Size:

Firstly, the square shape is so much bigger than it looks in photos! At 32 x 32 cm, and with 7.5 cm sides, it really can hold a lot of food: 6.3 Litres to be exact. This means that this roaster is so much more than meets the eye. Think meal prep cook-and-freeze style lasagnes or other family-favourite casseroles, roast potatoes, pot lucks, birthday cakes and bake sales. Not to mention killer roasts and braises.

Non-Stick Technology:

Scan Pan’s Stratanium+ non-stick technology is of the highest performing available. The hard-wearing non-stick is metal-utensil safe – this comes in handy, for example, when shredding a BBQ Pork joint or beef brisket with two forks, without having to remove it from the roasting tray – this will allow roast to better soak up the gorgeous roasting juices. I’ve ruined several non-stick by accidentally scraping with utensils in the past. It’s quite easy to do, by using a whisk for pan juices, or a knife or metal spatula to cut slices. But with Stratanium+ there is no need to worry about causing damage with utensils.

Whilst the non-stick is super hard-wearing, it is carefully crafted in Denmark where it is also made sustainable and regulation safe being completely PFOA free. The pan is oven safe up to 260C, and dishwasher safe.

Actual Performance:

Being able to complete every step in the roaster makes it a dream to work within the kitchen. The Square acts as a frying pan with the thick cooking base making it functional on any cooking surface, including induction.

I like to bulk cook a mixture of finely chopped onions, carrots and celery – this is called “mirepoix” and I do that when I see the produce is lurking in the bottom of the veg drawer, looking like it is losing freshness.

The base heats and retains heat evenly – just like a fry pan. So browning meat, deglazing the pan and then transferring to the oven is a cinch all in the one roaster.

I also put my Square to the test making a Beef Wellington, the ultimate in show-stopping table centrepieces. The process of prepping and cooking the Wellington was seamless and completely made in The Square. From searing the beef to reducing the Red Wine Jus, I used the pan for every step. I even had enough room for the sides in the same pan.

Cleaning the pan is very easy with the non-stick technology, helping food not to get stuck to the surface. I also very much appreciate using only one pan in the kitchen – that alone cuts both prep time and cleaning time.

The main points to remember about TechnIQ The Square Roaster:

  • Many uses in one pan: searing, deglazing, reducing, roasting
  • High performance, top of the line non-stick technology
  • Holds a high volume of food
  • Easy to clean
