How to Improve Your Food Presentation in 2 Steps

Becky Gilhespie |

Ecology Platter Use Height

Look around at any foodie’s Instagram feed and you will see photos of gorgeous pottery and stoneware in muted, natural colours. This elegant trend for earthenware serving dishes can also be seen in the top restaurants across the world right now. Harsh square edged dishes and serving boards are out, and understated, rustic finishes with natural curves are in. The Ecology Arid line perfectly captures this trend, with it’s cracked effect look and flowing oval curves. The denim blue/grey colour looks striking yet keeps an understated natural appeal.

But whatever serving ware you choose for your table, the food, of course, needs to be the star of the show. There are certain tricks you can do to make the food stand out as much as possible, and of course, there are endless ways to style your food, such as with colour, props, fabrics on the table, and more. I get asked this question a lot: how to make food look beautiful on the plate or a serving dish, and I have narrowed it down to only 2 easy steps?

How to Make Your Food Look More Appealing in 2 Steps

1. Use height. Pile food upwards, rather than spreading out. This makes the dish look more abundant. For this reason, I’ll often go for a platter rather than a deep sided dish for serving.

2. Use greenery. A sprinkle of green improves the look and appeal of food SO MUCH as it provides a pop of vibrant colour and texture which breaks up any monotony or blandness. Also, go for whole sprigs of herbs or greenery on the edges of the dish to frame the food.

The Ecology Effect

Ecology is definitely a brand worth checking out, not only for their fashionable tableware but also noted for their eco-friendly business practices: using sustainable manufacturing processes, recyclable packaging and organic ink in their products.

What I love about this Ecology Arid line is that there are so many pieces to choose from that you can mix and match in this collection. Varying sizes of plates, bowls, serving dishes and a beautiful water jug will have your table looking like it was set by a food stylist. I like pairing the steely grey/blue with other tonal colours like off-white or blue/green.

The small bowls in the collection get a ton of use in my house. From chips and dips to morning yogurt, from miso soup bowls to prawn shell holders on our holiday table.
