How does a bread bin keep bread fresh?

A bread bin commonly has several characteristics that keep bread fresher for longer these being:

  • Designed to be stored at room temperature to prolong the edible storage time without affecting the texture and taste that comes from refrigeration
  • A bread container should have loose fitting lids and not be airtight, to allow for airflow. This reduces condensation and the likelihood of mould forming, especially from freshly baked bread out the oven
  • The lid is tight enough however to prevent bread from drying out and protect the bread from pests like pantry moths or ants

The best bread bin brands

We offer a huge range of bread bins to suit a variety of kitchen design styles and budgets. Some of our top selling bread bin brands are:

Brabantia - designed in Europe and a proud multi-generational family-owned company, Brabantia is a leader in home storage and has an ethos of producing products with recycled materials and sustainable practices. We especially like their bread bins as they are well-made and can easily combine with their own pantry storage products like their storage canisters and have several with roller or front openings so that you can stack containers on top.

Bodum - another European company that is renowned globally for their double-wall glassware which has expanded into pantry storage, Bodum's bread bins have great seals and are available in beautiful bright colour options.

FAQS

What is the difference between a bread bin and a bread box?

None! There is no difference between the two however the term bread box is used more commonly in the United States where as in England, Australia and other English speaking countries they tend to use the bread bin more commonly.

Why are bread bins not air-tight?

This is to allow some minor airflow to prevent condensation build-up particularly with hot bread loaves fresh after baking, leading to soggy bread and mould growth.

Where is the best place to store a bread tin?

In a dry, cool place. If you have a storage pantry that's usually the best place to store bread out of the way of your kitchen countertops, however, most people tend to keep their bread bins on their kitchen counter usually within reach of their knife blocks to reach the bread knife as well as access their chopping boards so you can store and slice your bread conveniently.

Is there a way to keep bread fresh for longer in a bread bin?

Storing your bread loaves in a plastic bag can keep your bread fresh for longer as it will slow the drying out of your bread. Using a paper bag is less encouraged as it will tend to absorb the moisture of the bread, particularly freshly baked loaves faster. If you have fresh hot loaves stored in your bread bin, we recommend wrapping it in a sheet of baking paper or a beeswax wrap.
