Pyrex has developed a reputation for producing the hardest and longest wearing glass, where originally the company's scientists were producing tempered glass for the lanterns to light railroads. The challenge these scientists faced was that they had to produce a glass that could withstand the heat of the lanterns' flames while simultaneously the extremely cold air of winter without shattering. Following the tempered glass production, it was only when Bessie Littleton, a wife of one of the scientists requested her husband to bring home the same glass to be used as a replacement for her broken casserole dish. He gave her sawed-off bottoms of some battery jars which she used to successfully bake a cake - and thus the brand of Pyrex for the kitchen was born.
