4 Steps How to Revitalise and Clean Non-stick Cookware

David Kahn |

Cleaning your non-stick cookware is an incredibly easy task that is often overlooked. Below are four easy steps on how to revitalise and clean your non-stick cookware:
  1. Mix a solution of baking soda and water till it looks like toothpaste or simply purchase our absolute favourite all-purpose cleaner Bar Keepers Friend
  2. Rub the solution into the pan wherever you see dark shades built-up
  3. Scrub your pan with a bit of elbow grease with a non-stick cookware suitable cloth, we can’t recommend the Euro Scrubby highly enough
  4. Rinse clean and wash with hot soapy water and dry thoroughly
You may have to repeat these steps a few times before the carbon build up is removed.

What causes this carbon build up on nonstick cookware?

Many customers ask us this question. This build up occurs over time with use when cooking oil is used above its smoke point and extra virgin olive oil and butter are usually the cause as they have a lower smoke point than coconut and macadamia oils for example. This build-up of oil does not damage the pan but does require some elbow grease and the above 4 steps to remove it.

If these 4 steps don’t work you can consider an oil and vinegar solution instead and follow these 4 steps:

  1. Fill your pan with water and add ½ cup of vinegar
  2. Bring the mixture to a slow boil on the stovetop
  3. Once you see the oil layer rise to the top of the pan you can remove from the heat and drain
  4. Wash the pan with warm water and soap using the Euro Scrubby and dry thoroughly
It is important to remember that even the toughest of non-stick cookware (Swiss Diamond and Woll) cannot be used on high heat, medium at most. Once a pan is used on a high heat there is little that can be done to rescue it and unfortunately, this is considered product misuse which means your cookware is not covered under manufacturer warranty. This is why it is very important to read the manufacturer's care instructions and learn what is the maximum heat your pan should be heated to. As a rule of thumb, we at Everten believe you should always use a low to medium heat with non-stick cookware. In other words, you should never crank up the dial on your stove all the way!
